A Brief History of the David House

Lions David House Museum

The David House was originally designed and constructed in the late 1880s by the Lehigh Valley Coal Company to provide housing for its workers. Jenkin Reese David, a Welch telegrapher for the company, moved into the residence shortly after its completion. When Lehigh Valley Coal began to downsize its operations in the area, Mr. David was able to purchase the home. Jenkin R. David then organized his own small coal company, which he operated from the house while raising his family.

Vivian David, a daughter of Jenkin Reese David and Sophia Morgan David, grew to maturity in this house. She earned a degree from Lock Haven Teacher’s College, found a career in education, and moved to Bound Brook, New Jersey. She returned to Snow Shoe every summer and during holidays because of her great fondness for the Mountaintop Area.

In 1988, local businessman, William (Bill) Hall asked the David Family to consider selling the house to the Lions Club for use as a Heritage Museum. The David Family generously donated the home to the Lions Club, and the facility was opened to the public in 1996. Recently, through the Lions Club, the Lions David House Museum has become an independent entity, and its operation is fulfilled through its Board of Directors and volunteers.

The collection at the Lions David House includes books, local histories, memorabilia, quilts, uniforms, maps, and thousands of photographs as well as the preserved parlor and furnishings of Vivian David’s original home. The collection is presented in a uniquely organized arrangement.
